Story

We are delighted to be opening our exhibition STRANGE SPACE featuring the amazing artwork of NZ Artist Diane Scott. Diane’s body of vibrant and gestural work explores how we experience light, space and materials around us.

‘Elixir’ the incredible new art rug inspired by Diane’s original artwork, masterfully handcrafted to capture the essence of her powerful work. It really is outstanding.

I seek to make work that explores the perception and experience of form and space, particularly
through strength in beauty and beauty in strength. Using the spatial qualities of composition,
orientation and materiality to simultaneously make space visible and to bend it. I’m interested how an image can simultaneously question and withhold, and how that resistance to translation can be a vital part of an artwork’s enigma. I want the work to be atmospheric, visceral, and alive. To locate those spaces that oscillate from one state to another and resist a singular reading. The search for this atmospheric vibration drives the work.

“If you want to find out the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and
vibration” – Nikola Tesla

I’m interested in how pigments are light refracting material which reflect, refract, or absorb light.
Pigments aren’t where the colour resides, Light is colour, pigment are different shapes that bend,
filter and absorb the light.

My works are influenced by Sol Le Witt and Brutalism.

“The collaboration with Diane Scott began early 2023 with an introduction from Gaye Jurisich, a distinguished New Zealand-based artist who we had the pleasure of working with on a previous collection of art rugs.

Diane Scott, upon Gaye’s recommendation, was introduced to our Hamilton Gallery. What followed was a moment of awe and inspiration as Diane witnessed first-hand the extraordinary lengths we go to capture the essence of art and transform it into rug designs that are truly unique. Our commitment to preserving the spirit of each artist’s vision resonated with Diane, sparking a creative synergy that would define our collaboration. Together, we embarked on a journey to translate the beauty of her art into functional yet stunning pieces that will adorn spaces with a touch of sophistication and individuality.

The fusion of Diane Scott’s artistic vision and our dedication to craftsmanship has resulted in a collection of art rugs that goes far beyond the ordinary”.

“A true masterpiece, this meticulously hand-crafted art rug truly captures the essence of Diane’s original artwork and is a testament to the craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity that defines HANRAD.

Incorporating 31 individual colours in both NZ Wool and Art Silk, these yarns are skilfully combined to create over 100 different combinations that create a magical colour palette.

The artistry of this design extends through the thoughtful manipulation of materials and textures. Blending loop and cut piles of varying heights within the design, we achieve a mesmerizing play of light and shadow, adding a subtle yet captivating dimension to the surface of the rug. This careful consideration of textures ensures that the rug is not only a visual feast but also a tactile delight.

Our art rug Elixir is a living canvas that brings the world of art into the fabric of everyday life – a testament to our commitment to push the boundaries of craftsmanship – creating beautiful hand-crafted rugs that are as unique as the artists who inspire them”.
