Family history and traditional beliefs are integral in the design and making of traditional textiles used by the people from minority cultures. Originally the textiles used in these cushions were the side panels from a short collared jacket worn on ceremonial occasions by the Miao people. The base textile was hand woven from cotton the dyed using traditional vegetable dyes then cut and assembled into the final garment. The central square inserts are then hand embroidered with designs that reflect a particular embroiderer’s beliefs and family history.
